Associates Use Fundraising Breakfast to Benefit Local Firefighters and Community/blog/uncategorized/associates-use-fundraising-breakfast-to-benefit-local-firefighters-and-community/

Editor's note: This story is the final story in our "50 Stories of People Helping People" series. As we celebrated Penske's 50th anniversary in 2019, we spotlighted associates every Friday who are making a difference in their communities.

This past weekend, several Penske associates in the Peach State organized a breakfast at their local fire department to benefit first responders and families in the community.

Their event, Pancakes with Santa, originally started as a toy drive to benefit children and families in need during the holidays. Open to the public, attendees were asked to bring new and unwrapped toys for donation; in exchange, they received a stack of fresh pancakes and hot sausage. Afterward, children had the option of taking a photo with Santa Claus.

"We started hosting Pancakes with Santa at the fire department three years ago," said Josh Weaver, Penske Logistics' senior operations manager. "One of our associates is a volunteer firefighter here, and she introduced us to this charity they do annually that was in need of more staff to keep it going. A couple of us have since stepped in to help run it, and this year marked our fourth year involved."

Pictured left to right is Josh Weaver, Brian Rail and Kimberly Lawson.

Weaver and his team are the ones flipping the pancakes on the griddle and serving them to those in attendance. He also donates toys on behalf of their Penske location to support the cause.

That's not all. In addition to benefiting folks in the community, Weaver says the breakfast includes a raffle that supports the station's firefighters. When people enter, they can buy a raffle ticket for $5 toward a drawing later in the morning. This year's prize was a new Yeti cooler that Penske donated. The proceeds were then donated to the fire department.

"Over the last four years, we raised $1,600," said Weaver. "These men and women put their lives on the line for all of us. They purchase a lot of their own equipment, and we thought we could do a little more to help them, along with supporting the breakfast altogether."

Pictured to the right of Santa is Penske associate Heather Bing and the local fire department.

The senior operations manager says rallying associates together to volunteer at Pancakes with Santa isn't hard. He notes that this event is one that's circled on the team's calendar months in advance.

"I think it's a great thing for all of us to do," explained Weaver. "Yes, we're helping families and our local fire department, but we're also having a blast doing it."

"To do this as a group, I think it's a great team building activity for us. Getting involved in our community is important to many of us, and this event is a perfect and fun way for us to do just that."

Weaver gives credit to his entire team for the effort, including Heather Bing, Chris Wright, Kimberly Lawson, Brain Rail, John Ferguson and Michael Clark.

There's no question that Weaver's team looks forward to hosting Pancakes with Santa every year. What they're giving to people is more than just gifts and a hot meal; they're gifting an unforgettable and joyful experience. But, after four years of organizing this, it does beg the question: who on Weaver's team dresses up as Santa?

"Actually, it's one of the firefighters," chuckled Weaver. "Maybe in the future I or one of my coworkers will try on the red suit and hat. For now, we like working the griddle."

Holiday Travelers Expected to Gobble Up Roadways This Thanksgiving/news/holiday-travelers-expected-to-gobble-up-roadways-this-thanksgiving/

Planning a cross-country trip this Thanksgiving holiday? Make sure to pack an extra helping of patience for the road.

expects more than 55 million holiday travelers – the highest amount since 2005 – to travel from Wednesday, Nov. 27, to Sunday, Dec. 1, by train, plane and automobile to holiday destinations.

"Millions of thankful Americans are starting the holiday season off right with a Thanksgiving getaway," said Paula Twidale, vice president, AAA Travel.

AAA expects more than 49 million Americans to travel by automobile over the river and through the woods to their holiday destinations, stuffing already-congested roadways with even more motorists.

Wednesday afternoon is expected to be the worst travel period, with trips taking up to four times longer in metro areas, according to AAA and INRIX, a global transportation analytics company.

Preparation is a key ingredient to any successful move, but especially during the holidays, according to helpful moving experts.

Factors Driving Holiday Travel

AAA's 2019 Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Forecast estimates 55.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more to holiday destinations, representing a 2.9 percent increase over last year. Overall, AAA expects 1.6 million more travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday period when compared to 2018 figures.

What is driving the increase?

"Strong economic fundamentals are motivating Americans to venture out this holiday in near-record numbers. Consumer spending remains strong, thanks to increasing wages, disposable income and household wealth, and travel remains one of their top priorities for the holiday season," Twidale said.

Of those travelers, the majority – 89.3 percent are planning to travel to their holiday destination by roadway. Another eight percent are expected to travel by airplane, with the rest taking another mode of transportation such as trains and buses, according to AAA.

Survival Tips for Holiday Travelers

Here are our tips for moving or driving over the holiday.

Moving Prep:

  • Pace Packing: The holidays sometimes come with stress. By packing and loading one room at a time, and taking small breaks between rooms, the more successful and enjoyable the prep will be.
  • Protection Plans: Take advantage of Penske's many .
  • Accessories: Having a hand truck and/or furniture pads to help ease the pressure of moving items.

Before you get behind the wheel:

  • Don't Drink and Drive: reduces brain function, impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination. All are essential to operating a vehicle safely.
  • Get Rest: Make sure you get plenty of rest before you start your trip, and schedule breaks to remain alert and avoid drowsy driving.

Remember, busy roadways will be filled with more than just cars over the extended holiday travel period, with commercial trucks, vans and buses sharing the road.

  • Know the "No Zones" Near Trucks: On large trucks, blind spots are found around the front, back and sides of the vehicle – areas not captured on a truck's side mirror. For safety, Know the "No Zones" before you hit the road.
  • The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has developed the "Our Roads, Our Responsibility" program featuring for passenger and commercial vehicle drivers.

Penske's 24/7 Roadside Assistance will be available throughout the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to provide assistance for consumer renters and professional truck drivers as needed.

Penske Recognizes Veterans at Their 2019 Veterans Day Event/news/penske-recognizes-veterans-at-their-sixth-annual-veterans-day-event/

Penske's sixth annual Veterans Day Recognition Program took place on Monday at its corporate headquarters in Reading, Pennsylvania.

More than 100 associates, including senior leadership, were in attendance to honor and recognize the sacrifices made by the more than 1,200 veterans who work at the company nationwide – including the dozens of veteran associates who work in the Reading and Allentown, Pennsylvania, districts.

The event kicked off with opening remarks from Penske Transportation Solutions President and CEO Brian Hard. He highlighted how much of a strong focus the company has in hiring veterans as a part of their staffing strategies.

Hard said that in the last five years alone, Penske has hired more than 4,000 veterans.

The ceremony continued with speeches from Capt. Steven Zahuranec, Army veteran and now an executive officer for the 2nd Squadron, 104th Cavalry Regiment, as well as Army veteran and Penske associate Lee Schiller.

Veterans Speakers

Both touched on the significant value veterans bring to any organization, traits like a strong work ethic, being detail-oriented and adept leadership. Schiller went on to share how some of the things veterans learn or apply in the military can be carried with them through the transition to civilian life.

"Each soldier realizes that without the support for each other, then we could not complete the mission and come home safely to our families," said Schiller. "Our veterans are uniquely defined by these shared experiences and teamwork. We carry these experiences into our transition and life after service. We look for ways to be outstanding teammates and put the company mission ahead of our needs."

Schiller said that Veterans Day allows us to pause and think about the brave men and women who have served, as well as those who are serving currently.

"As you go to your homes tonight and recall about our program, remember the veterans here today and the 1.3 million service members on active duty today provide us with a blanket of security and the freedoms we enjoy as a nation," said Schiller.

As the event came to a close, each veteran in attendance received a gift of appreciation for their time in the military serving our nation. New this year, the event concluded with a brief flag ceremony that took place outside the corporate headquarters (pictured right). All attendees were invited to attend.
