One such valuable Penske associate is former U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Sal Boemia, an area maintenance manager for the company鈥檚 Northeast region. In this role, Boemia oversees maintenance for more than 10,000 Penske trucks across 40 service locations.
This 11-year veteran began his career performing jet engine maintenance on helicopters before becoming a Penske expert on fleet maintenance. 鈥淭he military does an outstanding job of teaching the skills needed to correctly follow any type of maintenance manual for jet engines or trucks,鈥� Boemia said.
Penske is participating with other businesses in the to provide 10,000 jobs to veterans like Boemia, as well as military spouses, by the end of 2013. The transportation company actively recruits and hires veterans nationwide to join its diverse U.S. team. So far this year, almost 11 percent of Penske new-hires were veterans, filling technician, vehicle maintenance supervisor/manager, driver, and and positions.

ATA is encouraging drivers and carriers to invite the local media, elected officials or community leaders to tour their terminals or get up in the cab and ride along with a professional driver during the week. It鈥檚 a great way to educate people about the essentials of the trucking industry as well as tout the impressive safety record of the drivers behind the wheel. 
Nancy McCullough enjoys seeing America from behind the wheel of her 18-wheeler. Her travels as a truck driver have taken her to 46 of 48 U.S. continental states.
Mary-Margaret Shimada (photo right) really enjoys working the overnight shift as a Penske Logistics truck driver. She delivers daily and national newspaper materials throughout central Florida in a Hino 26-foot box truck. She is home daily and her driving schedule is considered local.
